effects of natural disaster
The most common natural disaster Pakistan faces is flooding. The worst flood that Pakistan has faced so far was in 2010. It affected at least one-fifth of the country. In 2011, another flood hit Pakistan but this time only the Sindh province was hit.
The flood in 2010 had affected households with the lowest income the most. Their income was reduced by at least 75 percent, pulling them further down and away from the poverty line. According to the McRAM data, more than 60 percent of the farmers and livestock owners lost more than 75 percent of their expected income.
Tidey (2011) stated that the Sindh province was previously hit by the 2010 flood and they had not completely recovered from the disaster before they were once again affected by the flood. With the Sindh community being the main source of agriculture in the country, other provinces were also affected by the drop in food supply. Many Sindh farmers had lost their entire harvest, causing them to be unable participate in the growth of the economy. The floods had affected Pakistan’s economy and even caused food prices to increase.
