Gender Discrimination in Healthcare
Gender inequality is present in Pakistan’s healthcare system. In the society, males and the rich are seen above the rest. They are seen as boosters for the country’s economy. This holds influence over which area should have the best healthcare facilities and personnel. The poor would be left to travel long distances to get medical treatment.
Gender remains as one of the main factors as to who has priority to access Pakistan’s limited medical treatment. Due to prejudice, the country’s healthcare would save the male gender despite his age. This results in high maternal mortality rate as females as females are tended to after males. 49% of women upon reaching the medical facility were not given blood donations they require by their male family members. According to the poor, blood symbolizes energy. The males refuse to donate blood as they see it as a form of losing their ability to provide for and lead his family. Hence, many females die due to blood loss. (Ostrovsky, 2010)
