Religious discrimination
A study conducted by the International Center of Religion and Diplomacy (ICRD) found that Pakistan’s public schools and madrassas (Islamic seminaries that teach mostly Islamic subjects) portray negative thoughts about the country’s religious minorities and reinforces biases which fuel acts of discrimination against these religions. Teachers are not teaching how to tolerate one another’s religions but rather make the religious discrimination worse by identifying their differences. This religious intolerance and teaching of discrimination increases violent religious extremism in Pakistan, which weakens religious freedom.
Public school textbooks use by children often consists of strong Islamic orientation while the minor religions would be ignored or use as negative references especially the Hindus, whereas information on Christians are often inaccurate or offensive. Teacher also often express their negative views about the minor religions, transmitting these biases to their students.
This show that the children in Pakistan are mainly exposed to negative comments about the minor religions which is one of the main sources of such fueling of discrimination is Pakistan’s educational system.
