urban poverty
According to a report by the State Bank of Pakistan, the population in urban areas of Pakistan is poorer than the population in rural areas of Pakistan. This is because of poor growth in the economy, as well as the high influx and growth of population in the urban areas. In addition, resources are distributed in a skewed manner in urban areas, more skewed than the distribution of resources in rural areas. This can be seen as 60 per cent of resources were distributed to only 20 per cent of the urban population. However, this does not happen in the rural areas of Pakistan. (Perveen, 2014)
At the beginning of 2008, Pakistan's economic growth has been at a sluggish pace of three per cent annually. The slow growing economy is insuffient to combat the high influx of young Pakistanis venturing into the workforce. Unemployment hence forces the urban population into poverty. Furthermore, according to the State Bank of Pakistan, the FY-13 the national savings declined to 13.8pc, indicating a bad sign for the economy. (Perveen, 2014)
